The Surprise

Updated: Sep 26, 2022

It was September 21, 2021 when we found out we were expecting.

I worked at my teaching job all day, then went for a workout at a local CrossFit gym. My body felt different in a way I couldn’t explain, so on my way to the gym, I picked up a pregnancy test that I was going to take when I got home. I hadn’t had any alcohol since the beginning of August because I was training for a half marathon on September 25, 2021. I wanted to be as healthy as I could for my run, then treat myself to a drink (or two) after.

Even a couple weeks before taking the test, a co-worker thought my boobs were getting bigger. We were close enough that I didn’t get offended by her saying this, but I didn’t think anything of it.

So…it was around 5:30 or 6:00pm when I took the test. When it showed positive my heart rate increased by what felt like 1000 and I thought “no, that can’t be right”. I went downstairs to tell my husband. I didn’t wait and do one of those ‘cute’ Pinterest-worthy pregnancy reveals. I took another test because sometimes they can show false positives, and it turned up positive as well.

I could already feel a connection to the life that was growing inside of me, and I was scared of becoming a mom.

The next day I booked a doctor’s appointment and did a third test. When that came back positive I asked the doctor “are you sure?”. He replied with something along the lines of … “well, you’ve taken 3 tests now so I’m going to go with, yes”.

I did the run a few days later, but never did get that celebratory drink until a few weeks ago. The run was the easy part though, the harder part was hiding the pregnancy from everyone (except a few people) until we were far enough along.

I’d love to hear your story of how you found out you were expecting (or maybe you have a memorable way that someone else told you they’re expecting!). Leave a comment or send a message with your story!

And please remember, mama, that no matter what your initial feelings were when you found out you were expecting, whether it be overjoyed, worried, a mixture of those or anything else, YOU are amazing!
