The First Halloween

This year is full of firsts, including our girl’s first Halloween.
I warned my husband once we found out that we were expecting that we would be “those people” who do the family costumes. I am definitely a planner, but in previous years Halloween didn’t matter as much to me and it was often last minute shopping at Walmart for a Halloween costume to wear to work. This year looked much different.
Early September I reminded my husband about Halloween and how we would be doing a family costume. I asked him to come up with a few costumes that he would be okay with wearing, so I had a “husband approved list” of costumes for when I went shopping.
Halloween costumes are expensive, so I did some thrifting and found a Little Red Riding Hood costume for my girl for $5. Next, I had to find a wolf costume and I knew for the lumberjack that we’d be able to thrift some more or borrow.
The only thing I could find for the wolf was wolf ears, a tail, and some leg warmers, but it would have to do. $50 later at Spirit Halloween and wolf costume is found (ridiculous price for 3 items, I know!). Next up is Party City, just for fun. But there I find a battery powered toy chainsaw, thinking oh that would be perfect for the lumberjack! Then I see the price…$45! For a fake chain saw?! No thank you. So I’m texting friends, seeing if anyone has a fake chainsaw or ax. Thankfully, one of our friends has a fake ax that we can borrow!
Finally, our family Halloween costumes are ready with LOTS of time to spare.
Since our girl is only 5 months old, we didn’t take her trick-or-treating, but we did plan to take her to a community event called Trunk or Treat with some friends. However, this plan didn’t work out, but we still dressed up and went to visit some family. It was fun to dress up as a family for our girl’s first Halloween! We celebrated Halloween on Sunday, so actual Halloween day felt odd to me and not how it had in previous years. Between not dressing up on Halloween day and not handing out candy (since we moved out of town and there’s no trick-or-treaters out here), Halloween definitely felt different. BUT taking cute pictures of my girl in a pumpkin was fun and made it a bit more exciting and enjoyable! I definitely look forward to when she is old enough for trick-or-treating and all the excitement that will bring.
Do you thrift shop for your Halloween costumes, buy new, or a little bit of both? Did you take your baby trick-or-treating, or just when they were older?
